Folklore of Puck Fair

Welcome
to Our Site

This website explores the tradition of the Puck Fair, which is an Irish tradition that is celebrated every year on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of August. I will explore how this fair is celebrated, who celebrates it, and why it is celebrated. I will explain what the Puck Fair is, its history, and the tone of the celebration.

What is Folklore?

Folklore can be many things and be involved with many things. Folklore can be a quilt, a song, legends, online avatars, etc. It can be present in all kinds of informal communication such as verbal, customary, and material (Sims & Stephens, 2011). The Puck Fair is a legend and a ritual that is practiced every year. Read more about the puck fair below.

What is the Puck Fair?

Explore

The Puck Fair is celebrated for unknown reasons, but there are many creative theories behind its existence which makes it unique. Most of the theories go along the lines of goat saving the country of Ireland and from then on he is praised as king every year to honor his bravery. The first day is called "Gathering Day", the second is called "Fair Day", and the third is called "Scattering Day". During the capture (Gathering Day), a hunt is organized a couple days before the fair to capture a full-grown, male, wild goat. They take him back to crown him the king of the town for three days. The last two days are pretty self explanatory. The goat is well fed, has regular check ups, and treated with much respect. The goat is dressed in royal cloth and hoisted 40 feet in the air. He is truly treated like a king. Public houses and barware open at all times during the festival to celebrate the crowning. Everyone is laughing and entertained. There are many festivities such as dancing, eating, a horse fair, street performances, and merrymaking.

How does this folk group use this tradition to express their values and beliefs?

The Puck Fair is used as a way for families to reconnect with each other to share their future plans and spend time together (Sanger, 2019). It is also used as a way to make the best of hard times. The fair always has high attendance rates regardless if there is a catastrophe happening at the time. For example, during the great famine, attendance skyrocketed and this specific fair was recorded to be the most booming with fun (National Museum of Ireland, n.d). The Irish people use this tradition to express their values of family and coming together to get past hard times.

How does the tradition express their identity?

Folklore is a way to communicate values and information to members of the group, and the Puck Fair does just that (Sims & Stephens, 2011). The Puck Fair celebrates the people of Ireland and communicates the value of national identity. These people can easily get along and have a good time simply because they are Irish, and the stories behind the Puck Fair intensify these feelings. There are many theories around how the Puck Fair came to be, but none are for certain. Most of the theories center around a billy goat protecting the country of Ireland from destructive foreigners. The theories form a national identity shared between the Irish.
